In Andalusia, the Alpujarras area is located on the south face of the
Sierra Nevada, dominated by the imposing Mulhacen mountain culminating at 3,842 meters -
12,800 feet over the sea-level. A property in the Alpujarras offers a simple life in a quiet
area all the year round. Harassment, noise, stress and bad air stay away from this Granada
countryside region, moreover offering beautiful views. The Alpujarras altitude of the villages (about 1,000 meters - 3,000 feet over the
sea-level) vouches for a bearable summer heat, never reaching the extra hot climate met
in lower Andalusia areas.
Most of the current amenities, including medical cares and schools are
available more or less “around the corner”, but you should be aware of the fact
that specialized services and supplies may require an hour driving or so to obtain them from
the nearest town (Granada or Motril). The Alpujarras villages are accessible through well kept but somewhat
sinuous roads. In summer, it will take you about one hour drive to get to the nearest
beaches and a little bit more to the next town, and in winter, you will access the Sierra
Nevada skying slopes within two to two and a half hour.
The Alpujarras area mainly pleases individualists, who will find
affordable houses, farms called “cortijos” or “fincas”, sometimes
needing some repairs.
